As part of 'World Kidney Day' tomorrow, a private hospital will provide free gentic testings and launch the Polycystic Kidney Foundation of India.
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a cystic genetic disorder of the kidneys and the cysts are numerous and are fluid-filled, resulting in massive enlargement of the kidneys.
"The foundation will raise awareness about PKD among patients, public and the medical community. It will provide information, advice and support to those affected.
Through the foundation, genetic testing will be provided on complimentary basis and finances will be raised to fund research. This will help in finding cure for PKD," said Dr D S Rana, chairman of PKD Foundation.
According to Dr I C Verma, Secretary of PKD Foundation, PKD is the world's most common inherited disorder.
It is twice as common as multiple sclerosis and affects more people than muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, down syndrome and cystic fibrosis. Its frequency ranges from 1 in 800 to 1 in 1000 people. Almost 10 lakh individuals in India have ADPKD (Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease)," he said.
