Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy Wednesday extended greetings to the people on the eve of the 64th Liberation Day (De Facto merger day) of the Union Territory.
Recalling the history of struggle for liberation of the former French establishments and their merger with Indian Union, he said on November 1, 1954 Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam became free and together emerged as a Union Territory.
"The liberation was largely due to the joint fight of the people against the foreign rule and Puducherry has demonstrated to the world that no obstacles would prevent the zeal of the people to become successful in their efforts," he said.
He appealed to the people to continue their support to the government so that Puducherry could make still greater progress.
It was on November 1 1954 Puducherry and outlying regions became free de facto as a direct sequel to the referendum held in the Kizhoor village near Puducherry on October 18 that year.
PWD Minister and PCC leader A Namassivayam and Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) R Radhakrishnan also greeted the people on the eve of the liberation day.
