Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy today felicitated freedom-fighters at the historic site of Keezhur village near here today on the occasion of the 57th De Jure Transfer Day which marks the merger of the former French colony with the Union of India.

He said the role played by veterans like late V Venkatasubba Reddiar, Muthukumarappa Reddiar, Edouard Goubert and V Subbiah in getting freedom for Puducherry would also be remembered.

The Chief Minister said the Territorial government had drawn up plans to open a museum, library and other facilities at the memorial for martyrs in Keezhur.

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi addressed the freedom-fighters and referred to the historic significance of the village.

Speaker of the Puducherry Assembly V Vaithilingam, son of the late Venkatasubba Reddiar, legislators and others who took part in the freedom movement were among the others who spoke on the occasion.

It was in Keezhur that the French rulers held a referendum in October 1954 and decided on the merger of all the French establishments in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam with the Indian Union.
