Inaugurating the facility, the first such in the Union Territory, the chief minister said the system had been erected at a cost of Rs 88 lakh with financial assistance from the ONGC Karaikal and Puducherry Power Corporation Limited (PPCL).
BSNL has agreed to maintain the infrastructure for a period of three years, Narayanaswamy said.
Stating that the facility made use of 'bullet cameras' and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras erected at 52 strategic locations in Karaikal town, the chief minister said the installation process took more than six months.
"Police personnel will monitor the happenings round the clock from the control room and alert officials concerned in case of exigencies. The new facility will go a long way in crime prevention and detection in addition to equipping the administration to help road accident victims," he said.
Narayanaswamy claimed that criminal activities and rowdyism in the union territory had been curtailed as a result of which the number of tourist arrivals has witnessed an increase.
Puducherry Agriculture Minister R Kamalakannan, Puducherry DGP SK Gautam, District Collector R Kesavan and top officials of ONGC, PPCL and BSNL participated.
