Pondy govt neglecting agriculture, farmers' welfare'
Press Trust of India Puducherry : The opposition DMK today charged the Rangasamy headed AINRC government here with 'ignoring' farm sector and farmers' welfare' as vast stretches of fertile farmlands was being converted into residential plots posing threat to food security in the Union Territory.
Party's local unit convenor M A S Subramanian said in a release here that government had not evolved any firm policy to prevent conversion of farmlands into residential plots by real estate entrepreneurs causing threat to food production.
Farmers engaged in traditional farm activity were also not getting farm inputs on time and were left high and dry. A situation was being created by the government to lure farm lands into real estate business, he alleged.
Micro nutrients and fertilisers which would be available at subsidised prices in the Tamil month of 'Thai '(January to February) were yet to be given to farmers, he said and demanded that steps be taken on a war footing to protect agriculture and farmers welfare by implementing schemes without delay and without obstruction.
