MLAs of ruling Congress and opposition AINRC today objected to the sanction of licences for private players to sell liquor in villages in the Union Territory.
Raising the issue during zero hour in the Assembly, ruling Congress member N Dhanavelu said in Bahoor constituency, liquor shops have come up.
He alleged that Sooriyankuppam village in the constituency, which is close to Tamil Nadu was dotted with around 16 liquor shops.
"There should be restrictions and quite often liquor shops have been sources of disturbance to public peace," he alleged.
"The government should review the situation and ensure that no permission was granted for large number of shops to sell the liquor," he said.
Opposition AINRC legislator Gobika of Thirubhuvanai reserved constituency said she was shocked to find a large number of liquor vends in her segment.
"There is a liquor shop close to my house in my village.. I have already drawn the attention of the government in this regard and sought immediate steps to close the shops," she said.
Replying to complaints of the members, the PWD and Excise Minister A Namassivayam said he would look into the issue and take appropriate decision.
