The students also wanted adequate hostel facilities and other amenities.
The agitation was called by Pondicherry University Students Movement and a near tense situation prevailed on the premises of the university.Police rushed to the spot to restore calm. A heated argument erupted between the police and the agitating students.
It was alleged that the Vice Chancellor was not listening to the pleas of the students for adequate hostel facilities among other things. A circular issued yesterday by Registrar of the University warning students against launching agitations also allegedly intensified the stir.
The University is a Centrally funded higher education institution and was started in 1984 through an Act of Parliament.
