A commemorative postal stamp in honour of noted social worker late Baba Amte was released here by Maharashtra Minister for Finance and Planning Sudhir Mungatiwar.
Baba Amte, whose real name was Murlidhar Devidas Amte, was known for his work for the rehabilitation and empowerment of people suffering from leprosy. He founded three ashrams for treatment and rehabilitation of leprosy patients, disabled, and people from marginalised sections of the society.
Speaking on the occasion yesterday, Mungantiwar said, "Baba Amte set an example by dedicating not just his life, but also his family for the cause of leprosy patients and the down-trodden and the legacy is being carried on by his family's third generation."
The minister announced that a study centre would be set up at Gondwana University in the memory of the social worker.
"This centre would be of great help to tribal students and for those living in remote places to prepare for competitive exams. The centre would be set up at a cost of Rs two crore," he said.
Baba Amte's son Vikas Amte stated that it was a great honour for the Amte family.
"Baba was never after any awards or rewards throughout his life. Service to the down-trodden and the society was his sole motto and it was the biggest award in itself for him. However, our postal department has honoured Baba's work through the commemorative stamps," he said.
