Postpone election in Charilam seat in Tripura till peace is restored: CPI(M)
Press Trust of India New Delhi The CPI(M) today urged the Election Commission to postpone the election in the Charilam assembly constituency in Tripura till peace and normalcy were restored.
The election in Tripura's 19-Charilam (ST) Assembly seat, which was postponed following the death of CPI (M) candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma, would be held on March 12.
Debbarma died of a cardiac arrest while campaigning on February 11.
CPI(M) leader M A Baby met Chief Election Commissioner Om Prakash Rawat and handed over a memorandum alleging that the ruling BJP had unleashed a reign of terror and violence against CPI(M) workers and supporters in the state.
"With a view to vitiating the peaceful election and winning the seat in Charilam, the ruling party, the BJP, has let loose a reign of terror and violence against the CPI(M) and the Left Front. In such a situation, a fair and peaceful poll in the constituency is not possible. Therefore, we request you to postpone the election in 19-Charilam Assembly Constituency till peace and normalcy is restored," the memorandum said.
The Left party has submitted a list of its leaders and members whose house had been attacked, ransacked and looted.
