In all 2,140 coins, weighing 25 kg, were found in the pot made of mud, Tiruchengode Sub-Collector Suman told PTI.
The workers were digging the land belonging to one Selvaraj last evening when they stumbled upon the pot.
Some coins had the symbol of Queen Victoria embossed on them, he said, adding, the coins belong to the 1835 and 1840 period.
The coins would be deposited in the Treasury, he added.
