Tension mounted in Fatehgarh Churrian town here today after residents protested against the move of Powercom department to replace old electricity meters with new ones to reduce power theft.
Police teams held flag march in the town as tension prevailed with around 17 farmers' organisations extending support to the residents.
The problem started two days back when a Powercom department team went to Sukh Sagar Colony and tried to remove old electricity meters, but the residents allegedly attacked them and forced them out of the area, police said.
The residents have reportedly reinstalled the old meters, they said.
Police today arrested more than four dozens activists of the farmers' organisations who had extended support to the residents.
Powercom department Executive Engineer Raghubir Singh said the entire process of replacing the electricity meters would take three days and if any person tried to tamper with the meters, he/she would be booked under the provisions of the Power Supply Act, 2003.
