Dr. Hema Divakar, past president, FOGSI, will be the National Coordinator for the FOGSI-FIGO PP-IUCD initiative, which will be initially rolled out in six select centres across the country.
At present, there are a plenty of contraception options available but PP-IUCD was not pursued vigorously in the last two decades as a Population Stabilization initiative because of various reasons, a statement by Divakar said.
Divakar said government wants to be aggressive on this method (PP-IUCD) of family planning because it can have a large percentage of women covered soon after delivery to bridge the gap of unmet need of contraception.
The FIGO has implemented similar initiatives in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Tanzania. "We have received good response from people in those countries and we intend to institutionalize PP-IUCD in other developing countries, said Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, President, FIGO.
