The President, who is on a visit to the city, lauded the local AIR's role in his speech on the occasion of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the station.

"Through production of quality programmes over the years, AIR Chennai has made immense contribution to Tamil language and culture. Its role in the promotion of Carnatic music is particularly noteworthy.

It has nurtured young talent and helped popularise classical music far and wide. AIR Chennai serves today a wide spectrum of society," he said.

Mukherjee noted that the station has helped students through its education programmes and farmers through its agriculture extension programmes.

"Its special health and education shows are of great help to women and children. I am particularkly happy to know that AIR Chennai broadcasts programmes in Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada as well as Hindi and English, taking into account the cosmopolitan population of Chennai," he said.

"It is also impressive that its coverage includes South East Asia. Its Tamil programmes command a large fan following in the region," he added.
