Prasar Bharati will apprise the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of the pros and cons of stopping DD Free Dish programme for it to take a call on the matter, a source said.

The Prasar Bharati board, at a meeting here today, took the decision.

The source said the broadcaster was earlier asked by the ministry to review the continuation of Free Dish as it felt that the programme benefited only private channels and brought recurring liability to the government.

The pros and cons of stopping Free Dish will be sent to the ministry for it to take a call on it, the source said.

DD Free Dish is a free-to-air digital direct broadcast satellite television service owned and operated by Prasar Bharati, which runs Doordarshan (DD) and All India Radio (AIR).

Currently, there are 72 TV channels on Free Dish and reaches around 22 million households.
