Guilt over premarital sex may have led an Indian-origin man to brutally murder of a student from Singapore, also of Indian descent, at a hotel in Australia, a media report said today.
Senthill Kumar Arumugam, 31, accused of fatally stabbing Meena Narayanan -- his bride-to-be -- was wracked with guilt after having premarital sex with his victim, Courier Mail reported.
He was charged with murder yesterday.
Arumugam first met his alleged victim, a fellow Hindu, on an Indian marriage website, the paper said.
They met once in Singapore where they had sex - but the pair reportedly became depressed after the fact because they knew sex outside marriage was culturally forbidden for Hindus, it added.
Arumugam, an engineer, checked into the hotel last Friday after arriving in Australia from South Africa, where he had been living.

He is accused of stabbing Narayanan multiple times in the abdomen, covering her face with a pillow, and slitting her throat.
Police, called to the hotel after staff heard high-pitched screams lasting up to three minutes, had to force their way into the room to find Arumugam, who had allegedly sustained self-inflicted wounds.
Arumugam was taken to hospital for his injuries but yesterday made a brief appearance via audio link to Brisbane Magistrates Court.
