"We have taken out this rally to express solidarity with the students of Jadavpur University who were brutally beaten up by the police personal on Tuesday night. This is a shame for entire Bengal where police uses brute force to crumble a peaceful movement," said Debajyoti, a student of Presidency University.
A rally of nearly 1000 students, including students from other colleges, had planned a march from College Square to Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar.
Later, a five-member team of students met Joint Commissioner of Police (headquarters) Rajeev Mishra and demanded an impartial probe into the police action on the JU students on early Wednesday to rescue Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakborty and others who were gheraoed for several hours.
"We have submitted a deputation about the incident. We have demanded an impartial probe. We asked why the police had resorted to lathicharge, which Rajeev Mishra denied. We also want the removal of the VC of JU," said a student.
"They are trying to implicate us in false cases. We want to tell them that we are not outsiders. In a students movement, students can never be outsiders," said another student who participated in the rally.
