"I am sad to learn about the passing away of Lt General J F R Jacob. He served the Indian Army with distinction for more than three decades. He made his mark as Chief of Staff of the Indian Army's Eastern Command and played a key role in India's victory in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 and the liberation of Bangladesh.
"He also served the nation with distinction as Governor of the states of Goa and Punjab. For his meritorious services, he was honoured with Param Vishisht Seva Medal. His distinguished services to the nation and the Indian Army shall always be remembered," the President said in his condolence message.
