India accounts for the highest number of Tuberculosis and Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) Tuberculosis cases in the world, but the prevalence of drug sensitive TB and mortality due to the disease has come down significantly, the government said.
In reply to a written question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad, said a total of 17,373 fresh cases of multi drug resistant tuberculosis were detected across the country in 2012, with the maximum of 4,439 being from Maharashtra.
He, however, said the prevalence of drug sensitive TB has been brought down from 465 per lakh population in 1990 to 230 in 2012 and TB mortality from 38 per lakh population to 22 per lakh population, according to a WHO global report, 2013.
"As per World Health Organisation's World TB Report 2013, globally there are 2.9 million missed cases (either not diagnosed or diagnosed but not reported to the national TB programmes). 30 per cent of these cases are estimated to be in India," Azad said, adding missed cases are distinct from cases not found or cases found and lost.
The Minister also informed that a total of 14,67,585 patients have been registered for treatment under the Total Drug sensitive Tuberculosis in 2012 under the Revised National Tuberculosis Control programme, with the maximum of 2.72 lakh from Uttar Pradesh.
This was followed by Maharashtra with 1.36 lakh patients, Andhra Pradesh with 1.09 lakh and Rajasthan with 1.01 lakh.
Government had in 2012 made it mandatory for all TB cases to be reported after TB was made a notifiable disease.
