With the mercury level hovering over 40 degrees Celsius in most parts of the state for past two days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) today issued warning on prevalence of heat wave condition in the coastal region.
While Bhubaneswar recorded 43.2 degree C today, the neighbouring Cuttack city sizzled at 41.4 degree C against yesterday's temperature of 40.6 degree C. The state capital was followed by Hirakudf (43.1), Titlagarh (42.5), Bhawanipatna (42.2, Bolangir and Talcher (42 each).
Besides, temperature also went up to 40 degrees and above in Chandbali (41.7), Angul (40.9), Baripada (41.5), Jharsuguda (40), Keonjhar (40.3), Sambalpur (41.2) and Dhenkanal (41.1).
Sarat Chandra Sahu, Director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, said the alarming rise in temperature in coastal Odisha is due to the flow of hot wind from the central and north-west India towards the state. He said the IMD has issued warning of heat wave till tomorrow due to lack of rainfall.
"Till April 5, the wind flow towards Odisha was from the south and south-west direction at 25-30 kmph. But the direction of wind was changed to west and north-west since last 24 hours from Central and north-western India where the temperature has gone up to 40 degree Celsius and above since last 4-5 days," he said.
Sahu said due to the change of the wind direction, the hot wind has started blowing towards coastal Odisha resulting in the further rise in the day temperature.
On the abnormal rise in the temperature in coastal Odisha, Sahu said the wind flowing from west and north-west direction and moving towards the coastal region through Jharsuguda in western Odisha carries more heat from the dry land surface. There has been a rise of temperature by 3-4 degrees in coastal Odisha.
The IMD director, however, said the possible thunder squall in six districts like Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts in next 24 hours, could change the situation. If the rainfall due to the thnder squall is small, it will lead to further rise in temperature in the state after April 9 which will continue up to April 15.
