Prez cautions against negative impact of Internet

President Pranab Mukherjee today cautioned against the negative impact of technological advancement and the Internet, and said "the world is yet to face squarely the disruptive impact of these forces".
He also said politics without morality is no politics.
The president was speaking after receiving the first copy of a book, titled 'Metaphysics, Morals and Politics', from Amal Kumar Mukhopadhyay, former principal of the erstwhile Presidency College here, at a function at the Raj Bhavan this evening.
The book was released by retired Supreme Court judge Ashok Kumar Ganguly.
On a lighter note, Mukherjee said he was "an average student, rather less than average" as he praised the author with whom he had studied together in college.

The president said the world has made tremendous technological advancements, particular mobile and communication technology and the Internet.

The use of Internet is one of the important criteria to judge development in the world today, he said and cautioned against its disruptive impact.
Noting that politics without morality is no politics, he said, "It is absolutely necessary, and perhaps many of our directionless, random actions are stemming out from absolutely instantaneous response."
Recently, a high alert was sounded in the wake of reports of possible cyber attack by ransomware 'WannaCry' on the country's vital networks.
'WannaCry' has disrupted networks in over 150 countries, including Russia and the UK, and is being termed as one of the most widespread cyber attacks in the history.

But the government allayed fears saying there was no serious impact in the country except for a few isolated incidents in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
