Prez stresses need for social security of unorganised workers

President Ram Nath Kovind today emphasised the need to have social security for workers in the unorganised sector.

The president was addressing 'Asangathit Shramik Sammelan', a convention of labourers from the unorganised sector here.

"No society can progress without being mindful to the welfare of the working classes, the deprived and underprivileged sections. In the labour sector in India, the share of workers in the unorganised sector is over 80 per cent," he said.

Kovind said most of the workers of the unorganised sector are engaged in agriculture and construction.

"There is a great need for social security for these workers," the president said, adding that he was happy over the Centre's move to create a 'Social Security Code' for such workers.

Later in the day, the president addressed a function related to the 'Mini Smart City Mission' of the Madhya Pradesh government in the city.

Kovind said the Union government has launched the Smart Cities programme, as cities and urban centres make a huge contribution to the economy of the country.

"Of the 100 cities selected, seven are in Madhya Pradesh," he said, adding that the Madhya Pradesh government has taken a visionary decision to supplement the national initiative with a 'Mini Smart City' scheme at the state level.

The president said the scheme would open new pathways for ensuring prosperity for the people of Guna.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other ministers attended the event.
