President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari today condoled the passing away of Manipur Governor Syed Ahmed.
In a message to Ahmed's wife Syed Hasan Tara, the President said, "I am sad to learn about the passing away of Syed Ahmed."
Recalling Ahmed's distinct services in public life, Mukherjee said, "His services to the nation as the Governor of Jharkhand and Manipur will be always remembered. Ahmed was also known for his varied interests and rich contribution towards literature."
"Please accept my heartfelt condolences and convey it to the rest of your family members. I pray to the Almighty to give you and other members of the family strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss," the President added.
Condoling the death, Vice President Ansari recalled Ahmed's distinguished public service and said he was a leading figure of Maharashtra's political firmament and his departure leaves a large void.
Ansari said that he joins the nation in mourning this loss and "wish to convey condolences to Ahmed's family". "May his soul rest in eternal peace," he added.
73-year-old Ahmed passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai this morning, family sources said. He was suffering from cancer and was admitted in Lilavati Hospital in suburban Bandra last week, they said.
