: Low production and decrease in arrivals have led to an increase in price of Jasmine by upto Rs.250 per kg in the flower market in Sathyamangalam town.
Jasmine is cultivated over 25,000 acres in and around Sathyamangalam Taluk. Failure of rainfall and heavy mist took a toll on its cultivation and production came down to seven tonnes per day against the normal 12 tonnes a day.
Sathyamangalam Flower Producers Association President Muthusamy said the high demand at present could not be met due to poor production. For the past four days, arrival has decreased and so the price shot up to Rs.240 to Rs.250 per kg and may go further up in future, he said.
Still wholesale traders from Mysore, Bangalore, Tumkur, Mumbai and Coimbatore purchase more than five tonnes of Jasmine daily.
Jasmine is also exported to UAE daily from Mumbai.
He said during the corresponding period last year, jasmine was sold at Rs.200 per kg. Due to heavy arrival at 12 tonnes a day.
