Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has advised coconut growers to take a suitable decision on selling the nuts as price of good quality coconut would stabilise at around Rs 8 to Rs 9 and that of copra around Rs 52 to Rs 54 per kg this June.
Production of coconut in Tamil Nadu and Kerala was above normal whereas it was low in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh due to water scarcity. Arrivals of copra from other states were lower compared to last year and arrivals from Mysore may commence from June onwards, it said.
Demand from North India would also stabilise the prices of coconut in near future.
Considering this, The Price Forecasting Scheme of Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies in TNAU analysed coconut and copra prices for the last 14 years in Avalpoonthurai Regulated market of Erode district to give necessary advisory to coconut growers.
Tamil Nadu stands first in production, contributing about 50 per cent to the total coconut production of the country, followed by Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
Coimbatore stands first among coconut producing districts in Tamil Nadu with a production of 8,598 lakh nuts followed by Tirupur, Thanjavur, Dindigul and Kanyakumari.
