A privilege motion was brought against an MLA of the INLD, the main opposition party in the Haryana Assembly, for making objectionable remarks against a BJP legislator, which led to an uproar in the House.
On the concluding day of the Assembly's winter session, INLD MLA Kehar Singh and BJP legislator Gian Chand Gupta engaged in a heated exchange of words when Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was replying to a calling attention notice.
The notice was moved by INLD members to draw the Assembly's attention on the state government's decision of selecting applicants for Group C and D posts on merit basis.
When Khattar was replying to the calling attention notice, Kehar Singh raised some question over the claims of the chief minister on the issue of employment generation.
Gupta tried to counter the INLD MLA's charge. Upset over being interjected, Kehar Singh made some serious allegations against Gupta, drawing sharp reaction from the treasury bench.
Proceedings of the House were disrupted for quite some time as members of treasury benches and INLD MLAs traded barbs. INLD legislators, led by Jaswinder Singh, even demanded a probe over the allegation against Gupta.
Deputy Speaker Santosh Yadav unsuccessfully tried to end the logjam. Haryana Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ram Bilas Sharma even asked the INLD MLA to withdraw his accusations but to no effect.
Then BJP MLA Shyam Singh Rana moved a privilege motion against Kehar Singh. Other BJP legislators supported the motion, following which it was approved by the Deputy Speaker.
