Three pro-Inner Liner Permit (ILP) activists on preventive detention for their alleged involvement in anti-government protests last year, were released on bail today.
Khasi Students Union leaders Johny Sohkhlet and Readytonstone Nongrum and leader of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front Everson Syngkon were released from the district jail here.
This came after pro-ILP groups pressurised for their unconditional release from preventive detention by the government after both parties met on April 29 here.
The state government accepted the pro-ILP groups' proposal for a modified permit for outsiders in Meghalaya and withdrew sanctions where the trio were booked under the Meghalaya Prevention Detention Act (MPDA) since their arrest last year.
Nongrum and Sohklet were lodged in the Williamnagar District Jail in East Garo Hills and brought to Shillong District Jail on Saturday and were released today in the afternoon, KSU general secretary A Jyrwa said.
Both were arrested for their alleged involvement in setting ablaze a non-tribal tea-stall vendor in Bishnupur area last year at the heights of the ILP protest in the state.
The vendor, B Das, succumbed to his injuries after miscreants' poured petrol on him and set him ablaze inside his shop on November 16 last year.
The arrested pro-ILP activists were also booked under sections 436 IPC, 302 IPC and 120(b) MMPO Act pertaining to arsons, murder and conspiracy.
