"This is an ill conceived and hasty decision taken to help the corporate houses of the country through cashless economy. We are against it. Will the poor use debit cards and other online payment systems?
"This is nothing sort of financial emergency where the people of this country have to raise their voice. There is a need for demoditisation," noted singer and former TMC MP Kabir Suman said.
"In the name of wiping out black money, they are wiping out poor farmers, labourers and small businessman. It is nothing but a gimmick to fool the masses. It gives us immense pain to see people in distress," said an appeal signed by several intellectuals like film director Gautam Ghosh, theatre activists Shaoli Mitra and painter Suvaprasanna.
