State Advocate General A L Somayaji told a bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R.Mahadeven that pursuant to the orders of the Supreme Court, a contract had been entered into by the state government on June 16 for the demolition of the second block at Moulivakkam and the process started today.
The submission was made during the hearing of a PIL by DMK Treasurer M K Stalin seeking a CBI probe into the collapse of the first of the twin blocks of multi-storeyed residential building on July 28, 2014, which left 61 people, mostly labourers, dead and several others injured.
After a long legal battle, the Supreme Court had given its approval for the demolition of the 11-storeyed second block, upholding the decision of the district administration following fears about its stability.
