The students in all schools across Ganjam district will have to devote at least one period a week to read beyond their textbooks.
District education officer (DEO) Sanatana Panda has written to all headmasters of the schools to dedicate the seventh period of every Wednesday for the programme - Drop Everything And Read (DEAR).
"The programme is aimed at strengthening the library movement in the schools and to increase the reading habit of the students beyond their textbooks from the school level. The programme is also one of the aspects in the national curriculum frame work-2005 for creating love for books in the mind of students," he said.
The office of the DEO, Ganjam has already framed the guidelines for implementation of the programme from Class I to X in all schools. The students have been requested to bring the books of their interest or newspaper, periodicals to read in that particular period. If any one failed to bring, the schoolmaster should provide him from the library, Panda said.
The school authorities were also asked to make colour- code for books meant for different classes, so that they can easily select the books meant for them, he said.
"Several schools, particularly high schools in the district have already implanted the innovative project. It will take some more time for implementing it fully," Panda stated.
