Joining hands with other unions, Confederation of Newspapers and News Agencies Organisations today opposed the Centre's proposal for changing the labour laws and said any move to tamper Working Journalists laws will not be accepted.
"The employees of the newspaper industry will not tolerate any attempt to change the Working Journalists and other Newspaper Employees Act. We will oppose it tooth and nail," CNNAO General Secretary M S Yadav said.
Confederation will also raise the demand for setting up of the new Wage Boards and will support the cause of employees who have filed contempt petitions against non-implementation of Majithia Wage Boards, he added.
The reported move to allow firms with up to 300 workers to retrench the employees without prior nod from the government is detrimental to workers, Yadav said.
At present, firms employing 100 or more workers are required to seek government's permission for retrenchment under the Industrial Dispute Act.
According to one of the proposals, registering a trade union will require at least 10 per cent of the employees or 100 workers, in contrast to the current requirement of seven members, regardless of the size of the establishment.
These are part of the draft Labour Code on Industrial Relations Bill, 2015, prepared by the Labour Ministry, while proposing to combine Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, the Trade Unions Act, 1926, and the Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946.
The meeting of the executive committee of the Confederation was attended by Suresh Akhouri of IJU, Rajendra Prabhu of NUJ, Parmanand Pandey of IFWJ, Santosh Kumar and C S Naidu of AINEF and Roopchand from Times of India.
