The Punjab government today cautioned wheat growers against yellow rust disease, saying the current climate could trigger the attack of this fungal disease on crop.
Stating this, state Agriculture Minister Tota Singh asked growers to take recommended steps to prevent the attack of yellow rust on crop.
"Treatment is necessary to avoid yellow rust of wheat crop in the state," he said in a release.
If farmers have found any type of yellow leafs in the crops then they should excavate the plant from crop with the sample of soil and go to the experts for testing and as per advised by experts, they should spray crops properly, he said.
He said its adverse affect could be on non-recommended seeds of wheat.
Notably, Karnal-based Directorate of Wheat Research (DWR) has already asked farmers to keep a vigil on their fields to spot the disease attack on crop if any for remedial action.
The agricultural scientists have recently detected an incidence of yellow rust attack in Ropar district of Punjab, setting the alarm bell ringing among agricultural scientists and wheat growers as it could have damaging effect on crop if it spreads.
Yellow rust is a fungal disease which turns crop's leaves into yellowish colour and stops the photosynthesis activity.
