Twelve organisations of teaching and non-teaching staff, today protested against the passage of the West Bengal Universities and Colleges (Administration and Regulation) Bill 2017.
The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA), All Bengal University Teachers' Association (ABUTA), Calcutta University Teachers' Association (CUTA) and nine other organisations staged a sit-in at Jadavpur University (JU) to protest against the bill.
Stating that the passage of the bill will curb the autonomy of universities like JU and put them in same bracket with varsities in lower rung, JUTA Assistant Secretary Partha Roy said, "The act will bring crisis in the education sector and harm research work in places like JU."
"All the agitating organisations will march to Nabanna later this month to press for immediate scrapping of the said bill which is draconian in nature," he said.
The convener of ABUTA, JU, Gautam Maity said, from evaluation of answer sheets to code of conduct for teaching and non-teaching staff of the universities - everything will now be controlled by the state instead of the authorities of the universities.
It was an alarming sign, he said.
The sit-in was held between 1 AM and 4 PM at the Jadavpur University campus.
