A protest march was taken out in the city today demanding immediate withdrawal of a PGCIL project from Bhangore in South 24 Parganas district, where agitation against it claimed two lives in January this year.
The agitation programme was organized by Bhangore Andolan Sanghati committee, which is backed by Left parties and Congress.
The protesters marched from College Square to Esplanade area and Left Front chairman Biman Bose, Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Abdul Manan took part in it.
"Mamata Banerjee herself came to power by fighting on the plank of anti-land acquisition during Nandigram and Singur. But after coming to power she has forgotten those days and is forcibly trying to acquire land at Bhangore and set up a PGCIL project. The people are not in favour of it and so the state is using strong arm tactics against the people," Manan told reporters.
"Why is the government adamant on setting up a power project there. It should sit for discussions with all the stake holders to resolve the crisis. Many people have been arrested without any reason," Bose said.
The protesters also demanded immediate release of social activists arrested in January for taking part in the farmer's agitation in Bhangore.
Two persons were allegedly shot dead and several others wounded in clashes during a protest against construction of a sub-station at Bhangore in January this year.
