The villagers, who were demonstrating against Chakbandi (settlement) programme being run in Akrabad, went to meet SDM Debai Ram Singh to pressurise him to order stopping of the programme, they said.
The SDM refused to meet them, and sat in his jeep to go to the district headquarters, they said.
Seeing this, the agitated villagers pelted stones at the jeep, police said, adding that, the SDM was not hurt and he managed to escape in his jeep.
The villagers then entered his office and damaged the window panes and furniture, they said.
Later, accompanied by police escort, Singh came back to his office, they said.
According to the SDM, someone with vested interests was inciting villagers to agitate for the wrong cause.
