Protests after student's death

Locals today blocked the road at Changrabandha Chowrangi in Cooochbehar district near the Bangladesh border to protest the death of a student after BSF jawans allegedly opened fire.
Traffic along Siliguri-Cooch Behar and Mathabhanga-Changrabandha routes was disrupted as a result, a police official said.
He said police patrolling was continuing in the area and senior officials were keeping a tab on the situation.
A college student was killed last night after BSF jawans patrolling the International Border in the Changrabandha area of the district allegedly opened fire.
The deceased Tapan Burman, a second year student of Changrabandha College and a resident of Kamath-Changrabandha area had gone to attend nature's call along the barbed wire fencing of the International Border, when patrolling BSF jawans, suspecting him of trying to cut the fencing, allegedly opened fire, the police officer said.

"As angry residents poured out and protested and clashed with the BSF jawans, the jawans allegedly fired again seriously injuring two villagers, who were rushed to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital. Four others also received bullet wounds and admitted to Changrabandha Hospital," the officer said.
BSF officials in the area refused to comment on the incident.
