: Secretary of Tamil Nadu unit of CPI (M) K Balakrishnan Tuesday said the 10 per cent reservation for economically backward sections of people was politically motivated and that it was not correct to bring it in without any debate.

By introducing the quota, the BJP was trying to stay in power after the Lok Sabha elections, which was a dream that wouldn't come true, the CPI (M) leader told reporters here.

Stating that the small industries in Tamil Nadu were in trouble and almost facing closure, he said the second Global Investors Meet was nothing but an eyewash.

Referring to the Sterlite issue, Balakrishnan said only an ordinance would provide a long-lasting solution to the row over the copper smelter plant.

On the unrest at Sabarimala, he said the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was taking the right steps over the issue.

With regard to the nationwide bandh called for by trade unions against the alleged anti-workers policies of the Central government, the Leftist leader said the strike was a success.
