Centre for Advocacy and Research (CFAR) and Miranda House college of Delhi University jointly organized a public-cum-youth convention here today on the issue of 'Girl Child'.
Document titled 'Platform of Action Of, For and By Young People on Rights and Responsibilities towards Girl Child' was also released on the occasion.
Through the document, a group of young people have come together and demanded from the Department of Women and Child Development of Health and Family Welfare to ensure protection of the girl child by increasing awareness about their importance and challenging patriarchal values.
Speaking at the public-cum-youth convention, Executive Director of National Resource Centre for Women, Rashmi Singh said: "It was clear that while the declining Child Sex Ratio posed a major challenge, it also serves as an indicator to assess the impact of the action taken by different ministries and departments to better the status of woman and girls."
"We found that the biggest problems being faced in government schools were absenteeism of teachers and student, non-availability of books, unhygienic toilets, few computers, poor academic environment, high dropout rates, incompetent teachers. Also, teaching of English begins only in Class 5," Fizala, a student of Miranda House of Delhi University, said.
A charter of demand was also released during the programme addressing major concerns of young people including safety and security of girls.
