The Madras High Court today directed the Commissioner of Police, Chennai City, to publish on the website the places earmarked for holding public meetings to avoid difficulty for the public in conducting such programmes.
The direction was given by Justice M Sathyanarayanan on a petition by M Raja, district representative of DMK, seeking a direction to the police authorities to grant permission for conducting a meeting on July 3 in connection with the 92nd birth day celebration of the party supremo M Karunanidhi.
The application was rejected by the Inspector of Police, Saidapet police station, stating that the venue requested by the applicant is a place earmarked to conduct street corner meetings.
He challenged the rejection order in the High Court.
The Judge directed Raja to submit a fresh application to the Inspector of Police for conducting the meeting at Karuneewarar Temple Street, Saidapet, on which the Inspector of Police has to pass orders today itself and communicate the decision to the petitioner.
The Judge also directed the Commissioner of Police, Chennai City, to publish the places earmarked to conduct public meetings and street corner meetings on the website to avoid any kind of difficulty by both the applicants and the police.
