Puducherry ranks third in having lesser infant mortality rate

While infant mortality rate in the country has been registered at 42 deaths of kids per 1000 births the Union Territory of Puducherry has established a record of having lesser rate of infant mortality.
Director of Health and Family Welfare Services K V Raman told PTI today that Union Territory was having 11 deaths of children per 1000 babies born.
"This is a recordand is culmination of initiatives of various departments including the Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, Health and other departments implementing the Integrated Child Development scheme", he said.
Puducherry ranked third in the achievement next to Goa and Kerala.
He said that the government hospitals here had necessary infrastructures to address the health issues of young children including cardiac surgeries.
The Director said that the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital here had performed as many as 100 heart surgeries during the last one year and the services of the Chennai based Frontier Lifeline hospital were requisitioned and the team from the Chennai based hospital was rendering good service benefiting patients suffering from the cardiac problems and belonging to below poverty line.
The Puducherry government is operating a Medical Relief Society through which assistance was also available to patients to get specialist treatment for critical ailments.
Valve replacement and bypass surgery formed part of the treatment available in the government hospital here, he said.
