Around 15,000 people in the city today paid Rs 35 crore property tax after Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) allowed payment using demonetised notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.
"Following the decision that municipal corporations across the state will accept old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from people paying property taxes, we allowed people to pay their dues today," a PMC official said.
"Till 9 PM today, around 15,000 tax payers including residential and commercial, paid around Rs 35 crore in property tax," he said.
According to the official, the civic body will accept the dues till midnight and it is expected that the figure of property tax will increase as more people are coming to pay off their dues.
"The amount collected today is the highest single-day property tax collection in the history of PMC," he said.
In the neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), around 5,500 tax payers paid Rs 11 crore property tax till 9 PM, officials said.
