Police today resorted to canecharge and burst teargas shells to disperse a mob of irate villagers, protesting against denial of access to a road that passes through premises of College of Military Engineering (CME) at neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial township.
According to police, a mob of villagers who have been agitating for access to the road gathered this morning at Bopkhel near here, trying to force entry through the CME gate and pelted stones at police vans that arrived on the scene.
Some villagers and policemen were injured during the incident, they added.
Local MLA Gautam Chabukswar said the villagers have been demanding access to the road or an alternative route as they had to commute by a 30 km stretch diversion and the matter was being settled through a PIL seeking coordination between civil and military authorities to sort out the issue.
Police control room Inspector Kadam said the situation was now "under control" and peaceful.
Security has been beefed up in the area following the incident.
