Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today constituted a steering committee, headed by Olympian Randhir Singh, to set in motion the process of setting up a sports university in Patiala.
The committee has been set up under the aegis of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department to work out the modalities for setting up the proposed university, an official spokesperson said here.
It has been mandated to study the existing national and international models of Sports Universities and accordingly prepare a draft legislation to be presented to the government, he said.
The committee will also identify suitable land and buildings for the university in and around Patiala, including premises for its transit campus and to suggest a staff structure to incubate the university, he said.
The university, to be set up in pursuance of the chief minister's announcement in the Vidhan Sabha, in June this year, will promote sports education and training in the state, which has given several top sportspersons to the country over the years, he said.
Besides International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Randhir Singh, the committee includes Olympian Pargat Singh, along with former Vice Chancellor of Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education (LNIPE), Gwalior, J S Narula, and former Vice Chancellor of Rajasthan Sports University Dr L S Ranawat, he said.
Amarinder asked the chief secretary to take suitable action in this regard and monitor the progress of the project on regular basis.
