In a letter to Governor Shivraj V Patil, the Congress has urged upon him to order an enquiry into the state's "burgeoning debt" and direct the SAD-BJP government to observe fiscal propriety.
Congress Legislature Party leader(CPL) Sunil Jakhar said in the letter that the state's fiscal condition is "deteriorating" under the Parkash Singh Badal-led government.
Punjab Revenue Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Bill states that revenue deficit as percentage of gross state domestic product (GSDP) in the 2012-13 fiscal should be below 1.2 per cent, Jakhar said adding, "But in gross violation of norms, the revenue deficit has reached 1.61 per cent of the GSDP."
The leader of Opposition has also accused the government of pursuing wrong economic policies, leading to accumulation of Rs 38,019 crore as loans.
