Punjab fake encounter: Court adjourns hearing for Aug 19

A local court today adjourned for August 19 the hearing in a 1990 alleged fake encounter case in which Punjab Director General of Police S K Sharma and three other former policemen are accused.
The prosecution is likely to present evidence on the next hearing.
District and Sessions Judge Amarjot adjourned the case as an appeal by the accused against the charge sheet is likely to come up for hearing in the Punjab and Haryana High court tomorrow.
Sharma, along with the other accused former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) S P S Basra, the then Station House Officer (SHO) Balkar Singh and former Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Gurcharan Singh was present in the court today.

The court put off the matter to August 19 for production of evidence by prosecution.
The court had framed charges against all the four accused under sections 364 (kidnapping), 302 (murder), 201 (destroying evidence), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on June 3.

Kuldeep Singh (21), along with his cousin Jasmeet Kaur, had gone to Morinda to get medicines from a doctor on October 24, 1990.
"He was allegedly picked up by the police in a white colour van, which was bearing a number plate of police," according to the complaint filed by his father.

After police showed Kuldeep untraceable in its report, his father Ajaib Singh had approached the court.
