Punjab govt official injures five persons; probe ordered

A Punjab government official allegedly under the influence of liquor rammed his car at different places in Jalandhar and injured five persons, police said today.
Excise and Taxation Officer (ETO) Balwinder Singh Sidhu, posted at Phagwara, late last night rammed his car into a rickshaw, a cycle, a scooter and another car before being caught by people who later called in police, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Bhushan Kumar said.
While driving allegedly in an inebriated state, he injured five persons, police said, adding, he was arrested and was today released on bail.
The incident took place when Sidhu, while driving his car with a blue-beacon atop, was going towards his house in Urban Estate Phase-one in Jalandhar.
His medical examination confirmed that he was drunk while driving, police said.
Meanwhile, the injured persons admitted into a hospital have been discharged.
The state government has ordered a departmental probe into the incident, officials said.
