The Punjab government will oppose the wealth tax on farmers tooth and nail to safeguard their interest, Cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia said here today.
The decision to levy wealth tax on farmers whose land falls with in 8-km of municipal limits will deal a severe blow to them, he said.
Farmers in Punjab are already reeling under a debt of Rs 33,000 crore, Majithia told a public meeting here.
The SAD-BJP will hold state-wide protests on May two against the decision to impose the wealth tax on farmers, he said.
The party workers will stage sit-ins in front of the offices of the Deputy Comissioner, the minister said.
After sensitising and mobilising the public on the issue, the government will call an emergency session of the Vidhan Sabha on May 3, he said.
"We will launch a do or die battle on the matter," Majithia said.
