Jails in Punjab will be turned into 'correctional homes' and all necessary steps would be taken to check illegal activities, especially usage of drugs and mobiles by jail inmates.
All required step would be taken to check any illegal activity especially usage of drugs or mobile phones in jails by jail inmates, a spokesperson said.
Stringent action would be taken against any violation to prevent jails become breeding grounds for anti social elements, he said.
Highly trained sniffer dogs would be used to keep a tab on notorious prisoners and technologies like jammers and CCTV cameras will be used to prevent any illegal activity, the spokesperson said.
He said that 82 mobiles were seized in the last four months and 65 more have been recovered yesterday from different jails across the state.
State police would extend every possible help and support to Jail department to keep these jails free from objectionable/prohibited material so that it could never become breeding grounds for drugs and organised crime.
Meanwhile, two DSP Kulwant Singh and Devinder Singh Randhawa have been suspended by the state government following the recovery of prohibited items from jails during the raids conducted yesterday.
A high level enquiry has also been constituted to fix responsibility within seven days, he said, adding stern action would be taken against erring officials.
