Punjab Marshalls looks set to enter final of the Champions Tennis League after emerging as the team winning the maximum number of games in Group A so far.
The team from Chandigarh has remained unbeaten in the league and has six points coming into today's match against Raipur Rangers here today.
After the mixed doubles set, Punjab Marshalls held on to a slender 11-10 lead, as the deadly duo of Raipur Rangers Roberto Bautista Agut and Alize Cornet got the better of Marcos Baghdatis and Elina Svitolina 5-1.
Overall, Punjab needs to win this tie to make the final. They can still move into the title clash in Hyderabad if Raipur Ranger defeats them today by a margin of less than 5 games. If Raipur wins, both teams will have 6 points each, and then the winner will be decided on basis of number of games won in all Group A matches.
In the women's singles earlier, though Svitolina looked on course for an easy win against Cornet, the Ukrainian representing Punjab had to dig deep as Cornet fought back determined not to give in. Svitolina, who reached the semi-final of the WTA Elite Trophy in China last month, made some unforced errors and Cornet used the opportunity to crawl back into the set. But Elina, being encouraged from the bench by other Marshalls, clinched the set 5-3.
Marshalls' captain Greg Rusedski scored another emphatic victory over Thomas Muster. Rusedski broke the Rangers skipper twice to win 5-2 in the legends set.
