Punjab Municipal council polls on Feb 25: Official

Elections for 123 municipal councils and by-election to one ward in nagar panchyat in Punjab will be held on February 25, a senior official said today.
Punjab State Election Commissioner Shivinder Singh Brar said that along with elections for 123 municipal councils, a by-election to one ward in nagar panchayat of Bariwala in district Sri Muktsar Sahib will be held on February 25.
The counting of votes will be held immediately after the polls at the polling booth itself, he said.
The notification with regard to these will be issued on February 10, following which the Model Code of Conduct will come into force immediately and will end on February 27.
The filling of nominations will start from February 10 while last date for filling nominations will be February 13, he said.
The date of scrutiny will be February 14 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 16.

Brar stated that the 123 municipal councils and one ward in nagar panchayat of Bariwala district Sri Muktsar Sahib comprise a total electorate of 28,50,000 and there are 2,062 wards for these elections, he said.
The State Election Commissioner stated that all required election materials have been dispatched to the districts and the EVMs are currently under inspection for being declared election worthy.
Punjab DGP has been requested to ensure proper and adequate security for the electoral process, he said, adding that PSEC have set up registers to record complaint received which will be properly disposed and be maintained in Commission record.
Brar stated that the Commission wishes to inform all contestants that the elections shall be free, fair and very impartial.
