Two Service Selection Boards (SSBs) will be set up in Punjab with an aim of boosting army recruitment from north India and to meet the acute shortage of officers in the force.
The SSBs will be set up in Ropar district of the state, a Defence spokesman said here today.
Punjab government has handed over the required land for this purpose to the Indian Army, the spokesman added.
"This would become the fourth Service Selection Centre for the Indian Army and would be called Selection Centre North (SCN) as this would cater to the needs of Punjab in the north of the country," the spokesman said.
Till the infrastructure comes up at Ropar, SCN will be raised at Kapurthala on July one as its temporary location.
Commissioning of SCN in the state will help in motivating young children from northern India to join the Armd Forces and will provide job opportunities to many besides aiding growth and development of the area, he said.
The Army, as of now, selects officers for enrolment through 10 Service Selection Boards located at Allahabad (Uttar Pardesh), Bhopal (Madhya Pardesh) and Bangalore (Karnataka).
